Specific Classes
In brief
The principle of iota conveys more of an abstract totality of salient situational awareness filtered through criteria and perception, although it equally applies to specific measurable signals.
For basic systems such as a thermostat, this can be simply the temperature of a thermoelastic strip of metal or some kind of electronic reading. For humans, it is our senses, which can include our interoceptive senses of state, such as hunger, or frustration, or external senses that provide environmental cues. Complex organisations will have an array of business indicators. The level of complexity is not important; rather, the iota denotes a window on the outside (and inside) information about states.
The influence model of memetics (along with retention) is concerned with the encoding, or learning, teaching etc., and activation of rule-governed behaviour (RGB). Both encodings of the meme in the mind and subsequent activation apply to the iota input side, but culminate in the rho response (selected from kappa), in accordance with nu value. Learning, teaching, sales, and so on, require all three points on the triangle but are initially channelled through iota.

Capital Iota is the full set of situational awareness available to the system, of which a subset ι, is salient to the current context and decision. For example given that knowing, or at least believing, that it is Tuesday, and it is raining, and that the earth is round, and everything else, much of it would not be involved in deciding whether or not to take an umbrella.

There are two aspects to iota in the noam framework: the awareness of the environment (stimulus) which is denoted by sigma The external input is just one component of iota (ι) as the totality of perception of relevant situational awareness, external or interoceptive. This totality includes change and persistence of own state, of environment, of capabilities, of receiving information and so on. Iota does not refer to the states nor sensations themselves but perceptions filtered, through a set of criteria, and recognised at a high-level. This is before any value judgement or moral meaning, good or bad, is imposed.
Iota can be expressed as propositional (or sentential) statements and logic – a predicate over a subject that gives a truth value. (‘I have an umbrella’ would have a predicate ‘I have’ and subject of ‘an umbrella’; this statement has a Boolean value of either true or false)
For example, three facts might make up some salient iota condition:
- ‘It is raining.’
- ‘I am getting wet.’
- ‘I have an umbrella that I can put up.’
This is higher than the direct sensation of primary experience (impulses lowering the temperature of the skin) yet is a precursor to, if I chose the interpretation, of being miserable because I am cold and wet
Such relevant situational awareness can include perceptions of:
- Internal states:
- interoception: hunger, thirst, pain etc. (state, pi contentment, tau motivation)
- introspection
- awareness of values of what is important or irrelevant (nu motive)
- awareness of capabilities and limits, of behavioural repertoire (kappa)
- belief that a certain action in a situation will produce an outcome (upsilon)

- External determination of environmental opportunities and threats

For iota, the 3Ws provide an input filter, criteria against which to judge whether the situation merits activation of some RBG or not; they mask the stimulus to provide a trigger condition.
In object-oriented programming and electronic or mechanical systems, when is emphasised as it models event drivers and handlers. For organisations, humans (and other social animals), the location (where is it wet? where is the food?), or others around them (friend, preditor?) have greater import.
Noams model dynamic events. Iota is often about detecting change in the environment or within the self. It may be part of a feedback loop whereby detecting an initial change internal or external (iota) invokes the system to respond (rho). That response may affect the state of the system internal or external, thereby providing a subsequent iota signal. The cycle would continue until terminating uni-stability is attained.
Engagement levels:
Direct engagement with the environment (level 0) gives iota involved in dealing with a presenting situation and includes acknowledgement of the ability to do so.
Acquisitional engagement (level 1+) is about recognising the need to acquire means (where level 1 is frustrated) and recognising those means in the environment.
Meta-cognition engagement (level ∞) might philosophically be recognised as sapience.
Relation of other framework elements
Perceptions (iota) are evaluated against values (nu) in a relationship of satisfaction (pi) which is indicative of the need for action (xi) resulting in motivation (tau). These relationships can be modelled in the Toulmin framework.

Sales (direct)
A sale is predominantly an interaction between the customer’s noam of purchasing (or acceptance), and the salesperson’s noam of pitching (or offer). Of course, the entire sales process is a more complex transaction involving closing, and aftersales involving a longer sequence of noams. It is, however, down to the salesperson to manage the interaction particularly at the critical stage of (ethically) influencing the decision making, and that requires them to understand the customers purchasing noam.
From the customer’s perspective, a demonstration or the special of the salesperson would be a sigma – that of persuading the prospect that buying a product that exhibits the presented sigma (features, brand). The customer has the potential response of purchasing the product but needs to evaluate what is presented against what they need (nu) in order to make that purchasing decision. The salesperson would enquire as to those needs, and gear their pitch (the customer’s sigma) according to the needs they have elicited, and the interaction usually involves iterated question and answer of both parties. FAB selling and the FABULA framework are mostly concerned with pitching on the pi edge (forward slash) of the customer’s noam – that is relating the features, advantages, and benefits of the product that match the customer’s needs.
For a customer wanting a lawnmower to cut a patch of grass, were the salesperson to ascertain their lawn size, life-style, attitudes and so on, then they might recommend the GTech Chordless as it has fab of [] thereby meeting the customer’s needs. This recommendation would constitute the sigma for the customer who would evaluate that models potential satisfaction (pi) against how much effort they want to put into gardening and what they are prepared to pay.
Sales (MLM)
An existing MLM distributor, in addition to spotting new customers, would also be able to spot a potential downline and invite that prospect to look at the compensation plan
AIDA: Similarly, an advert conveys, via sigma, instructions for acquisition behaviour, although the activation could well be delayed until the customer goes into the showroom and sees the product on display.

Origin and history
Sigman and Rho arose simply as the Greek letters for stimulus-response. However, the noam framework evolved a richer, although more abstract, view of the stimulating input, and iota began to refer to the entire situation including signals from both internal states and external environment. Iota does, however, preserve some of the meaning of stimuli in that it can be a trigger, or cue, to a behavioural response.
The 3Ws, as part of the 3MV3Ws, is based on Kipling’s 5Ws, but interrogative words go further into antiquity and represent the loci of an issue.
